• What driving licence do I need to rent a motorhome in Norway?

  A standard car licence (category B) lets you drive vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of up to 3,500 kg, which covers the majority of rental motorhomes. The licence, minimum age and other requirements for each vehicle are listed on its page.

• Can I wild camp with a motorhome in Norway?

  Norway's right to roam applies to people on foot and in tents, not to motor vehicles, and driving off-road is prohibited. With a motorhome you can usually stay overnight in lay-bys and parking areas where no sign prohibits it, as long as you keep a respectful distance from houses and cabins and leave no trace. Campsites and motorhome stopovers are plentiful and have the service points you need for water and waste.

• When is the best time for a motorhome trip in Norway?

  June to August brings the mildest weather and the longest days, with the midnight sun north of the Arctic Circle in June and July. It is also the busiest period. May and September are quieter, although some high mountain roads can still be closed in May. From late September to March the nights are dark enough for the northern lights, but winter driving means snow, ice and short days.

• How do road tolls work with a rental motorhome?

  Toll stations in Norway are automatic: you drive straight through and the passage is registered electronically through the AutoPASS system. How tolls and ferry charges are billed depends on the rental company operating your vehicle, so check the rental conditions when you book.
