Scandinavia is famous for its natural beauty, and Norway is one of its star attractions. From the country's dramatic fjords to Oslo, the cosmopolitan capital of Norway, it's easy to see why this is a popular tourist destination. With tales of polar bears running around the Arctic Circle and the Aurora Borealis on full display, it's no wonder that Norway travel is at the top of many people's bucket lists. When taking a trip to Norway, there are certain tourist attractions that are must-dos. Here are some of the top Norway highlights to visit.

No Norway vacation would be complete without a visit to our spectacular fjords. Norway fjords are famous the world over due to their grandiose scale and the breathtaking scenery they provide. In fact, Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site to see, as is Nærøyfjord. You have to experience the unspoiled landscapes and deep, jagged cliffs jutting outward and descending into the water firsthand.

Oslo in the south is the capital city of Norway and is home to architectural, historical, and cultural treasures. During your visit, be sure to stop by Vigeland Park to see the sculptures, Akershus Fortress and former prison, and The Royal Palace. The Viking Ship Museum houses three 9th century Viking ships for those interested in Norwegian history. And of course, one of the main Norway tourist attractions in Oslo is the famous work by expressionist painter Edvard Munch. His seminal painting, The Scream, is housed in both the National Gallery and the Munch Museum.

Just as popular as Oslo is Bergen in the west. Norway motorhome rental makes traveling between towns and major cities like Bergen easily accessible. Pay a visit to Bryggen, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Sognefjord, the country’s longest fjord. There's also the Fløibanen funicular, which takes you to the top of the mountain for spectacular views overlooking the second largest Norwegian city.

The Northen Lights in Norway

When you decide to visit Norway, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis. The Arctic Circle crosses the top part of the country,  and thanks to this proximity to the North Pole,  we experience extremes in daylight. Norway’s location means in the summer we have nearly 24 hours of light during the Midnight Sun.

By contrast, the opposite happens during the colder months. There's not as much daylight and the Northern Lights are visible. Mother Nature's light show in the sky is what Norway is known for, in addition to its beautiful fjords. The undulating waves of emerald and amethyst provide a dazzling illumination of the nighttime sky. This stunning natural wonder is Norway tourism at its best.

If you plan on catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights during your Norway trip, head to places like Tromsø or the Lofoten archipelago. This is a famed viewing spot features dramatic scenery and mountain peaks reaching for the sky. If you didn't get to stop by the Viking Museum in Oslo, there's also one close by with a reconstruction of a Viking longhouse. The colourful buildings and quaint fishing villages in this region of Norway only add to its charm.

With nearly 50 national parks located in Norway, many of the mountains, the serrated peaks and sweeping views will leave you in awe. You're going to spend a lot of time outdoors during your Norway holidays. Why not take a hike and fill your lungs with clean, crisp, fresh air? Travelling to Sweden?
